seasonaBeing in the southern hemisphere, the seasons in Patagonia are reversed from those we have in North America.  Summer runs from December to March.  January and February are the warmest months, though it can also be windy near the southern tip at this time.

In March, Buenos Aires has average highs of 79 degrees.  In Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world and very close to Antarctica, average highs at the same time are 55.  Here are links for more details:

Idle Days In Patagonia - W. H. Hudson, 155 pp.  First published in 1893, this is an illustrated tale of a naturalist's Patagonia exploration.  Part travelogue, part natural history, part adventure story.


The Wild Shores of Patagonia: The Valdes Peninsula & Punta Tombo - Jasmine Rossi, 224 pp.   Photographs of wildlife & seascapes, and discussion of whales, seals, and other wildlife.


Natural Patagonia: Argentina & Chile - Marcello Beccaceci, 124 pp.   Bilingual Spanish-English book with powerful photographs, and writing on the geology, wildlife, and natural history of Patagonia.


Backpackers' Latin America, Vol 1: Patagonia - Christabelle Dilks, 400 pp.  Guidebook primarily aimed at travelers on a shoestring budget, also has 15 pages of color photos, and numerous maps of the region.


Berlitz Latin American Spanish Phrase Book - Berlitz, 224 pp.  This practical, portable phrase book is packed with Latin flavor and flair, from everyday expressions to culture and safety tips.


Patagonia (map) - International Travel Maps.   Color travel map of Patagonia shows elevations, cities, roads, ferry routes, points of interest, beaches, active volcanoes, lighthouses, and more.


Riding Into the Wind: On Horseback Out of Patagonia, a Life Journey - Elly Foote, 369 pp.  Inspiring true story of a young couple who journeyed 32,000 kilometers through Patagonia on horseback.


Argentina Cooks!: Treasured Recipes from the Nine Regions of Argentina - Shirley Lomax Brooks, 320 pp.  Regional recipes, and descriptions of how each region's geography and culture have influenced its cuisine.


20 Best of Classical "Tango Argentino" - Hugo Diaz, CD.  Tango is the sensual, soulful national music of Argentina.  This CD has traditional sounds and also some more jazzy versions.


In Patagonia - Bruce Chatwin, 240 pp.  Chatwin's classic 1977 account of his journey through Patagonia is filled with evocative descriptions, unusual history snippets (Butch Cassidy), and amusing anecdotes.
