The Virgin Islands have a tropical climate, moderated by the trade winds that blow through the islands year round.  Highs are generally in the 80's, and lows in the 70's.  Bring a sweater though - the breeze is continuous and it can get cool in the evenings.

Hurricane season peaks in September, with 96% of Atlantic hurricanes occurring between August and October.  August & Sept are also the hottest months.  In November, the weather typically stabilizes again.

Pirate Hunter: The True Story of Captain Kidd - Richard Zacks, 434 pp. Entertaining story of the legendary seaman and buccaneer.  Was this infamous pirate really one of the good guys?


Best of the British Virgin Islands: An Indispensable Guide - Pamela Acheson, 145pp.  Travel guide to the islands, brimming with insider hints and local knowledge.

Lonely Planet - Diving & Snorkeling British Virgin Islands - Mauricio Handler, 136 pp.  Describes 63 of the BVI's best dive sites, with full color photographs.



Reef Fish Identification: Florida, Caribbean, Bahamas - Paul Humann, 512 pp.  Easy to use reference book, with color photos, drawings & clear descriptions.  Excellent for snorkelers and divers.


Reef Creature Identification: Florida Caribbean Bahamas - Paul Humann, 448 pp.  Partner guide to the above, but this one covers sponges, crabs, starfish - everything except fish.


Sir Francis Drake: The Queen's Pirate - Harry Kelsey, 566 pp.  This book raises an opposite question from Pirate Hunter.  Was Queen Elizabeth's favorite explorer and adventurer really a cowardly villain?


Treasure Island - Robert Louis Stevenson, 272 pp.  The classic tale of adventure, treasure and piracy.  The swashbuckling story that brought Long John Silver to life.



A Pirate Looks at Fifty - Jimmy Buffett, 448pp.  The musician famous for Margaritaville and Parrotheads takes a sailing and flying trip with his family, and thinks about life as he's turning 50.
