Weather
weather Belize has a lovely sub-tropical climate, with moderate temperatures year round.

The dry season is December through May, and this is when most tourists visit the country.  Of course, even in the dry season, expect to see some rain -- a necessary ingredient for a rain forest!  Occasional chilly "northers" can blow through between December and February.  By March when we visit, average highs are about 80 degrees, and it's the driest time of year.

The rainy season is June through November.  This time of year there are frequent afternoon showers.  Hurricanes are most active July to October.  Though hurricanes don't often hit Belize, they've had some devastating strikes in the past.

Reading list
Recommended reading for your Belize adventure.  Get more out of your trip by reading up beforehand.

Insight Guide: Belize - Huw Hennessy, 341pp. This visual travel series captures the unique character of a place with brilliant photos and informative text. Covers ruins, rainforest, and beaches. Good for a pre-trip picture of the country.

Understanding Belize: A Historical Guide - Alan Twigg, 240pp. Belize history is a fascinating tale of many cultures, and this book tells it from its days as a pirate haven. Provides more background than typical travel guides.

Belize : Land of the Free by the Carib Sea - Thor Janson, 96pp. Marvelous photos of Belize, with animals, people, rainforests, villages, ancient ruins, and today's cities.  Accompanying text gives you much more detail.

The New World Tropics - An Introdution for Naturalists - Richard Walton, DVD. Video introduction to the tropics, the world's most biologically diverse region. Fascinating information, conveyed with photographs and great enthusiasm.

Travellers' Wildlife Guides Belize & Northern Guatemala - Les Beletsky, 477pp. Naturlist's guide to the Belize, with color illustrations of native birds, mammals and reptiles, and info on habits & habitats. Also background on natural history and ecological conservation.

Birds of Belize - H. Lee Jones, 317pp. With nearly 600 species of birds, Belize is quickly becoming known as an unspoiled birding hotspot. This is the authoritative field guide for the country, so if you're into birds, this is for you!

The Ancient Maya, 6th Edition - Robert Sharer, 931pp. This is the definitive book on the Maya - the most comprehensive and lavishly illustrated book on the subject. Readable prose, good organization, and excellent photographs.

The Ancient Maya: New Perspectives - Heather McKillop, 460pp. Examines the debates concerning Mayan hieroglyphs, the Maya economy, and the conflicting theories behind the enigmatic collapse of the Maya civilization.

Maya Cosmos - David Freidel & Linda Schele, 544pp. Compelling and controversial book interweaves Mayan religious concepts, archaeology, anthropology, and personal experience, and reads like a well-paced novel.

Mexico Guatemala Belize Nelles Map - Map. Nelles maps are easily readable relief maps with major roads, point-to-point distances, and useful legends.  Map covers multiple countries, including Belize.

Reef Fish Identification: Florida, Caribbean, Bahamas - Paul Humann, 512 pp.  Easy to use reference book, with color photos, drawings & clear descriptions.  Excellent for snorkelers and divers. I've used mine on lots of trips.

Reef Creature Identification: Florida Caribbean Bahamas - Paul Humann, 448 pp.  This is the partner guide to the above, but this one covers sponges, crabs, starfish - all those marine creatures besides fish.

Our Man in Belize - Richard Timothy Conroy, 340 pp. Tales of the author's days in the US Foreign Service, assigned to the backwater British colony of British Honduras (now Belize).  Funny views of a world not-so-long gone.

A Salty Piece of Land - Jimmy Buffet, 503pp.  Amusing tale of a cowboy from Wyoming who wends his way around the Caribbean, meeting a lively bunch of characters.  Part of the story is in Belize -- but don't expect any parties like this on our trip!  smiley
