Maltese Falcon - with and without the fire

Deanna Keahey  ·  Oct 22, 2008  ·  5 Comments

I blogged earlier about Fleet Week in San Francisco.  What I didn’t realize at the time was that the day after we anchored at Angel Island for lovely lunch, there was a massive fire on the island!

There was an amazing sailboat in the bay at the time — the Maltese Falcon, reportedly the largest sailing yacht in the world.

Here’s the “before” picture, taken on Saturday, with the Maltese Falcon, and Angel Island in the background.

Here’s the “after picture, taken on Sunday. Same boat, same island. What a difference a day makes!

I was in San Francisco for our annual Napa Valley & San Francisco tour, and stayed an extra day to go sailing.  Little did I realize that about the time I was getting home from my trip, this fire was starting on Angel Island.

Wow! The difference between those two photos is amazing. That is a gorgeous boat and as much as I hate to say it, that second pic is just beautiful as well. Hope that no one was hurt in that fire.

There have been so many fires in California lately. It’s so sad! Angel Island is amazing though, isn’t it?

Hi Julia & Erin - It really is sad, but I suppose fires are part of nature. As far as I know, nobody got hurt, but a lot of the island was burned.

The one with the fire is such a beautiful picture. It really is too bad that the fire started, but at least no one was hurt or what not.

The pictures are a good reminder of what a difference a day or even a few hours can make.

You’re so right — things can change in an instant. That’s why we’ve got to make the most of today. Who knows what tomorrow will bring? Enjoy life while we can! :-)
