It is always best to travel with a buddy but not always an option. it is best to check with the local police department and ask if there are particular areas to be avoided.

I am not sure traveling alone is such a good idea. In Lake Tahoe where many young men and women come from all parts of the world and rent a cabin for their Tahoe accommodations say they would not consider traveling alone. Most all of these folks work at the many ski resorts during the winter and the boat docs during the summertime.

I just returned from a month long trip to Europe - by myself. It was a fabulous trip. It's great to be able to change plans once in transit without having the agreement (or disagreement) of a group of other travelers with you. You are free to spend your time as you wish. You have a feeling of accomplishment when you have made train connections, figured out the money system, made new friends in the process. This is not a venue for those who cannot stand being alone or don't know how to entertain themselves in an unfamiliar city. But for those of us who love to travel without restrictions of others, it is ideal.
