Belize - Crushed at Caracol

Ever had one of those days?

Ever had one of those days?

.
Caracol was a major Mayan city, that today lies in ruins in the jungles of Belize. This was a booming metropolis, and it shows how advanced the Mayan civilization was.

At its peak (around 650 AD, well over a thousand years ago), Caracol had about 140,000 people (more than double the current capital, Belize City). It covered an area much larger than the modern city. And astonishingly, the largest pyramid at Caracol, known as Caana (”sky palace”), is still the tallest man-made structure in Belize!

While exploring the Mayan ruins of Caracol with our guide, I spotted this carving, that captured the way I feel some days. :-(

This poor guy has the weight of the world pressing down on him. While the upper part of the carving is pretty well gone, it’s easy to picture gods and important rulers up above, oblivious to his plight. Or perhaps they weren’t so oblivious — knowing the Mayans, they’re probably getting ready to sacrifice him!

Maybe my difficult days aren’t so bad after all. :-)

We’re putting the finishing touches on our Belize trip for women right now, and we’re looking forward to an exciting adventure!

Wow… Nice post.. I love this picture but when I read your post I became sad because I never thought that there’s is a point in our civilization had suffer and the others are not. And I think that we called Life, there is always be a sacrifice on both parties so that the other will be on top.

It’s quite interesting to think about what the what the carving in the picture signifies. From looking at the picture, it looks very well crafted and ancient. I would imagine that it must be pretty amazing to view something like this up close and in person!

Belize is a country that I’d love to visit but there are so many places in the US that I need to see first. I think there is a book and TV show on the 1000 places to visit b4 you die and Belize is on the list, so if I can get the money and time, I’ll try it.

Kim - I always think anything with ancient ruins is amazing to see. You can imagine the lives of all those people over a thousand years ago…

Carl - Belize definitely belongs on the list - if you can make it, it’s a very cool place!
