Action is a great restorer

Monday inspiration:

Action is a great restorer and builder of confidence. Inaction is not only the result, but the cause, of fear. Perhaps the action you take will be successful; perhaps different action or adjustments will have to follow. But any action is better than no action at all.”
~ Normal Vincent Peale

OK, I guess that means I’d better get moving today! :-)

It’s so true, isn’t it? It’s easy to build up a fear in your mind, while you’re sitting there not doing anything about it. When you take action, the fear starts to dissipate in front of you.

Speaker, nervousFor instance, public speaking — one of the most common fears people have. I’ve felt that fear myself, and used to be a very nervous speaker. By going to Toastmasters, and actually getting out and speaking, I realized it wasn’t that bad after all — in fact, it’s fun!

Often, the perception is worse than the reality. Inaction lets that feeling of fear grow and grow. By not taking action, you’re making the fear more powerful than you are, since the fear is controlling your actions.

Speaker, confidentWhen you do take action, you move from that perceived fear in your mind, to the reality of the situation. You also gain power - now you’re in control. You’re deciding what to do, rather than letting the fear control you. Now you’re bigger than the fear.

This almost always works. As the man said, the action you take may or may not be the best one, but taking any action at all is the key. I suppose I should face up to my fear soon, and schedule a dentist appointment! :-)

I’ve always found, at least so far that the fear is far worse than the actual event (except maybe in the case of the dentist). As I grow older it seems easier to get immobilized by fear but also when I can overcome this I find great rewards. Hey who knows I may yet ride a horse in this lifetime. Thanks

I know from personal experience how fear can lead to inaction and inhibit you in many ways. I certainly agree taking action and conquering your fears is the best way to go.

Hi Patricia - There just might be a horseback ride in your future — if there is, let go (of the fear, not the horse), and have fun with it! (-:
