Gee, a crooked politician. Who could believe it? ![]()
The former Costa Rican president, Miguel Angel Rodriguez (1998-2002) is being investigated on corruption charges. Now his bank accounts, 4 properties and 2 cars have been embargoed by the courts, and there’s a lien on his salary.
Rodriguez appears to be a shady character. He was involved in a questionable deal that granted cell phone contracts to French company Alcatel. Now he’s also suspected of involvement with a Panamanian company, which supposedly paid out $2.1M to Rodriguez and other officials.

Seems I just wrote about a corrupt leader in Ireland, and now it’s Costa Rica! But that won’t stop our women’s travel to Costa Rica. We go there every year, and people love it!

Ms. Keaney,
You have got the facts wrong. There are not houses or cars embargoed. Only the reference to the lien in Rodriguez’ salary as a economics professor is correct. Certainly there is an investigation, one that has taken more than 4 years without leading to a trial yet –something that would not be acceptable in the US. The main and only witness against the former President, is the guy who got caught red-handed. By the way, Rodriguez was out of Costa Rica when the investigation started, and he went back voluntarily to face the music –not your typical shady character.

Hi Agustin -
Thanks for your comment. I read 2 articles that referenced cars and properties, but it is certainly possible that they were incorrect — thanks for setting the record straight on that.
I’m not privy to what evidence they have to support their case, but will certainly be watching for the outcome … which could be a while in coming. The Irish prime minister’s case has continued for over 10 years.
Thanks for your comment! – Deanna.

I’m afraid you are behind the news, Agustin. American-European newsblog stands behind its facts as reported, regarding the embargo and lien. However you are right about the shady nature of the strongest witness against the ex-president. However, my sources in the Judicial investigative say that seized files and computer memory will back up their case. We must remember that Sr. Rodriguez must be considered innocent until proven guilty. At least that is the assumption of the A-E newsblog. When referring to this case, we must be aware that it is a case of ALLEDGED corruption so far.

Hi Rod -
Thanks so much for the additional information on the Costa Rica case of alleged corruption against ex-president Rodriguez. I appreciate your time to stop by & help clarify the matter, and also the fact that your American-European newsblog stands behind its reporting.
Best wishes, – Deanna.
